12 Mar Committed
“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.” (Romans 12:1-2)
As I got home from a busy week on the road, I searched my bookshelf at home for a book I needed for an upcoming presentation. As I was perusing the titles, I stumbled across a symbol of what was one of the very first commitments I made in my life; my Junior Soldier certificate.
I was SEVEN years of age when I dedicated my life to be a loving and obedient child of God. I’m not going to divulge in this communique exactly how long ago that was, but all those years ago, the unstoppable power of the Holy Spirit invaded my being and I made my first ever public commitment to my Lord and Saviour. Blessed with positive and experienced mentors in my local Corps, they pledged to guide me through what this commitment truly meant. There I stood as a youngster, unaware of the plans God had for my life but through the example and commitment I saw in others, was expectant and willing to put my life in His hands.
Friends, I haven’t looked back from that moment. Committing my life to Jesus as a Junior Soldier was one of the best decisions I have ever made and was the catalyst for a life full of blessings. God introduced me to the love of my life, Tracey. He blessed us with two beautiful children, two additional children by marriage and one amazing grandchild. I get to serve God every day in the best ministry in the world; all because of that commitment to trust God to keep me good.
Our movement is on the precipice of one of the most significant collective commitment moments in our history here in Australia. Salvos from every mission expression throughout the country will come together on Sunday 18 March or Monday 19 March, to say ‘I Will… ’. Picture it with me: Junior Soldiers, Social Program Managers, Adherents, musicians, receptionists, volunteers, vulnerable Australians seeking our support and Salvation Army Officers alike will all come together to declare their commitment to the newly created, God-inspired vision of The Salvation Army in Australia. This moment will ensure all Australians have the opportunity to be transformed, and in unison, will give God a sign that we’re passionate, dedicated and proud to commit ourselves to transforming Australia one life at a time with the love of Jesus.
Don’t underestimate the power and impact of the commitment of any one person to live, love and fight alongside others in the places of hardship and injustice – and we will see Australia transformed one life at a time. I am with other Australians counting on you to make a difference.
I strongly encourage you to plan now to participate in the day of Commitment and Covenant Renewal at a local Salvation Army Corps/Church next Sunday, or at your place of Salvation Army employment or service on the Monday 19 March 2018. God has given us a valuable opportunity in this nationwide event to partner together for His mission. Let’s embrace the moment and the mission afresh.
