From the National Commander

FOMO
ˈfəʊməʊ/
noun
informal

1.     Anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, often aroused by posts seen on social media.

How many times a day do you check your device: your phone, tablet or computer? Sitting on the train going into the city this week I watched as it appeared almost everyone spent the entire journey on their device scrolling through their apps. The fear of missing out (FOMO) is rampant! This fear has driven focus to a heightened sense of what is happening in the world around me – what is going on in my friends lives, and their friends’ lives and my friends’ friends’ lives as well.  No one wants to be left out or be the last to know.

We continue to see evidence across Australia of the promises of God being realised – He is doing a new thing! Isaiah announces the message of God to his people:

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.  See, I am doing a new thing.  Now it springs up; do you not see it?”  (Isaiah 43:18-19).

But not only did God promise that He would do a new thing, He invited His people to see it. And we see evidence here too, transforming Australia one life at a time – inviting us to see it and participate with Him in His work.

The national vision we have captured from across Australia through the participation of more than 2500 people sharing their hearts and voices, is a vision God not only wants us to see, but also to share.  As the season changes to Spring, images of fresh life and growth leading to harvest emerge in our minds. Alongside this change in season, a wave of ‘Living our Vision’ workshops will be offered in every corps, centre and Salvation Army expression in Australia to discover locally what God is doing and has in mind to do.

Not only is God doing a new thing, but He offers an antidote to the FOMO factor.  He extends each one of us an invitation so we don’t MISS OUT! Henry Blackaby, in his book Experiencing God, encourages us to discover what God is doing and do whatever is necessary to prepare ourselves to join him.

The ‘Living our Vision’ workshops have been designed to help each one of us to come together locally and consider God’s continuing work in our communities, and capture an understanding of how the national vision statement will be expressed locally. As we see how God is transforming Australia one life at a time in our community, we can align ourselves with this new thing God is doing.

Watch for the opportunity to participate in a local ‘Living our Vision’ workshop and mark the date and time in your calendar.  Plan to be there.  Pray now, expressing your desire to see what God is doing and what He has planned to do in your local area.

I don’t want to miss out on what God is going to do in and through The Salvation Army as He does a new thing and brings to reality the vision he has given to His Army.  Let FOMO drive us to accept His invitation to see and participate in His mission without reservation and with great anticipation.
